The Lost Art of Christmas Cards

Christmas Cards

I love Christmas cards!!! I really do! It’s one of the things about Christmas that I enjoy the most. I know it may seem odd, in this digital world that we find ourselves, how someone could enjoy such a thing, but it’s true. They don’t have to be fancy, colorful, expensive or funny for me to like them. Just receiving them from someone important in my life is enough for me.

Maybe it’s the sentiment, the thought behind the card, or who it came from; maybe it’s the fact that a lot of people just don’t do it anymore, or it could just be that it reminds me of when I was younger that I enjoy them so much; I guess it could be all of the above, I’m not really sure. There’s nothing like going to the mailbox and finding a Christmas card. For me, it’s like getting Christmas presents all month long!

A few years ago I started hanging up the Christmas cards I received. And soon it became part of my regular Christmas decorations. I hang them up in my kitchen by a couple nails and a piece of twine. Not too fancy, but it does the trick. I just like seeing them hang there. It makes me feel loved and thought of and cared for and all warm and fuzzy inside πŸ™‚ I smile every time I see them. Some years there are more cards than others, but that doesn’t detract from the meaning. Sometimes I leave them up until New Year’s and other times I leave them hanging longer. I haven’t quite figured out the right length of time yet.

I remember making Christmas cards when I was younger. It’s amazing what you can do with some crayons, glitter, glue and some construction paper! I remember giving cards to my classmates and then displaying them on a coffee can for everyone to see. Did anyone else do that? Below is a picture of what I’m describing.

Can-holder-13_0 I actually found a great site that shows you how to do it! The site is Sophie’s World (they also get the photo credit for the picture). You can click on the name or picture and it will take you to the tutorial of how to make them.

But it’s not all about getting Christmas cards. I also enjoy sending them. Yes, I know this takes time, but it’s so much fun!!! I like to write a message in each one that is personalized to the individual. I know some people do Christmas letters or photo cards of their family or kids. Those are pretty neat too, but for me, there’s nothing like a good ole’ handwritten Christmas card sent through the mail.

Does anyone else send Christmas cards or display them in a unique way?
